Staying Hydrated for Optimal Health
As a functional nutrition coach, I’m always on the lookout for ways to help my clients feel their best.
And one of the simplest yet most important ways to do that is by staying hydrated!
Proper hydration is crucial for overall health, as it helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, and keep joints lubricated.
And the benefits don't stop there!
Staying hydrated can also lead to:
- More energy
- Better mood
- Better bowel movements
- Improved digestion
- Increased focus
- Fewer sugar cravings
So, how can you make sure you’re getting enough H2O each day?
Here are my top tips:
- Drink only filtered water: All water consumed should be filtered water to ensure it is free of contaminants that can harm your health.
- Start the day with hydration in mind: First thing in the morning, drink a glass of filtered water with added electrolytes. You can do this by adding the juice of 1/2 a lemon to 16 fl oz of filtered water or using clean-label electrolyte powders. This will help rehydrate your body after a night of sleeping and set the tone for the rest of the day.
- Drink filtered water before coffee or caffeinated beverages: It's important to replenish the fluids in your body before drinking coffee or caffeinated beverages, as they can dehydrate you. So, make sure to drink filtered water before your morning cup of joe.
- Sip filtered water throughout the day: Aim to drink filtered water throughout the day, rather than just chugging it all at once. This will help keep you hydrated and avoid overloading your system.
- Incorporate water-rich foods: In addition to drinking filtered water, you can also incorporate foods that are high in water content into your diet. Think cucumbers, watermelon, and berries!
- Track your intake: It can be helpful to track how much-filtered water you’re drinking each day to make sure you’re hitting your target. You can use a water bottle with measurement markings, or an app on your phone. A general target is to drink 1/2 of your body weight in fluid ounces of filtered water each day. For example, if you weigh 160 lbs, aim to drink 80 fl oz of filtered water.
- Exercise hydration: If you’re exercising, it’s especially important to drink filtered water before, during, and after your workout. This will help replace the fluid lost through sweat and prevent dehydration.
By following these tips, you’ll be on your way to optimal hydration and all the health benefits that come with it.
So go ahead and drink up, my friends!
